FAT and SAT

One of the validation support stages consists in carrying out equipment or system qualification tests at the supplier's facility.

These are referred to as Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) and are performed in compliance with a previously drafted plan.

FAT are functional tests of custom-made equipment/system that are agreed with the Customer. Factory Acceptance Tests are carried out before the equipment/system is delivered to the Customer.

FAT testing procedure involves checking all elements of equipment/system to ensure its future trouble-free operation.

These tests ensure that:
  • equipment/system performance characteristics fully comply with the declared specifications;
  • functional requirements are met.

Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) include the following phases:
  • draft factory acceptance test procedure and submit it to the Customer for evaluation and approval;
  • prepare equipment/system that will imitate field operating conditions;
  • draw up technical specialists working schedule for the entire period of factory acceptance tests;
  • technical drawings analysis;
  • complete the tests;
  • submit the filled in test report to the Customer.

FAT testing ensures that all equipment parameters are verified.

The testing process includes the following checking points:

  • check efficiency and clarity of technical description;
  • check all certificates (certificates of materials, instrumentation, roughness, etc.);
  • check appearance and check all instruments mechanically;
  • check all electric appliances and their functionality;
  • generate test results and determine the resulting error.

Another level of validation support are qualification tests of equipment/system that are carried out on the Customer's production site. They are referred to as On Site Acceptance Test (SAT) and are performed upon equipment delivery to the Customer, completion of its erection and connection to process media.

Two options are available for SAT test.

The first option is to carry out this test without prior completion of FAT test. In this case the IQ/OQ qualification is performed by a team of specialists who arrive at the Customer's site specifically for completion of SAT test.

Under the second option the FAT test is first completed on the supplier's site.

Then the equipment is packed and shipped to the Customer's facility.

SAT test is performed after erection and commissioning. The testing covers only the items that could be affected by partial disassembly and transportation of equipment.

Normally, the second option is used for qualification.

Option one is used only for implementation of very large turn-key projects.

SAT scope is similar to that of FAT. SAT findings and reports are considered as additional IQ/OQ documents. SAT reports take priority over FAT reports as confirmation documents. In order to optimize testing process and avoid duplication of identical procedures SAT, IQ and OQ are combined and carried out simultaneously.
